Council Tax
Council Tax is payable on domestic dwellings and is used to pay
for the services we provide. The Council Tax rates are published
each year together with information on how rates are assessed,
eligibility, how to pay and so on.
We also provide information on how to appeal if you think your
Council Tax bill is incorrect.
How you can pay your Council Tax
Direct Debit
This is the our preferred way of paying Council Tax because it
is cost effective and efficient and there are also safeguards built
into the system to protect you. As Direct Debit is so
efficient, it is the only method of payment for which a choice of
payment dates is offered, either
- Monthly on 1, 9, 15, 19 or 25 of the month
- Anually on 9 April
- Quarterly on 9 April, 9 July, 9 October and 9
January
- Half yearly on 9 April and 9 October
In most cases your details can be taken with just one call to
the Council's Contact Centre on 0845 121 2970 which is
open Monday to Friday 8.00am-8.00pm and Saturday 8.00-1.00pm.
Please have your account details (branch sort code and account
number) when you telephone.
Alternatively, you can apply by completing a direct debit
application form and sending it to the address above.
Council Tax Direct
Debit mandate (116kb pdf file)
Please note: Council Tax instalments which are not paid
by Direct Debit, are due on or before the tenth of each
month. To avoid reminders being issued, it is essential that
your payment is made on time.
Online payment
You can use your credit or debit card to pay your bill.
Standing order
The Council accepts payment by standing order, but it does not
have as many advantages as direct debit and your payment still has
to be received by the tenth of the month. If you want to
pay by this method, please contact the Council's Contact Centre on
0845 121 2970 for details.
By telephone and debit card
To use this option, phone the Council's automated payments
system on 01706 926180 with your debit card and Council Tax
reference number to hand. Lines are open 24 hours, 7 days a
week
Payment by post
You can send your payment directly to us. Please make your
cheque or postal order payable to Rochdale MBC and send it to the
address above.
Please ensure that you write your Council Tax account number on
the back of your cheque or postal order or enclose a payment slip
from your payment book. Please do not send cash through the
post.
Payment at post offices and paypoint outlets
You can pay your Council Tax at any Post Office or PayPoint
outlet, but you must always present a Council Tax bill or document
with a barcode on when making your payment. It usually
takes up to 3 working days for us to receive your payment. If you
pay by cheque at the Post Office then your cheque should be made
payable to ' Post Office Ltd' . This service is
free.
