Child and Poverty Strategy

This document sets out our strategy to meet government targets to eradicate poverty. In 1999 the government committed itself to halve child poverty by 2010 and eradicate it by 2020. Whilst significant progress has been made towards the 2010 goal, the 50% target has not been achieved.

The current economic climate will inevitably have a negative impact on the eradication of child and family poverty. Indeed, many see that it will directly worsen the life chances of those children and families currently living in poverty and directly increase the future numbers of children and families living in poverty. Although there are many challenges, we are making a real difference to the outcomes for children and young people.
