Health Related Absence Policy and Procedures

We value the contribution of our staff in the delivery and maintenance of quality services to the people of Rochdale. While recognising that employees may be prevented from attending work through ill health, the authority has a duty to maintain service delivery and minimise disruption. Therefore we're committed to attendance, managing all health related absences and creating a culture whereby all employees work to maximise improving attendance for the benefit of both themselves, and the community and partners.

The costs of health related absence has a significant impact on service delivery and on colleagues within the workplace and the number of days lost to health related absences should be kept to a minimum.

We'll achieve this through:

  • Promoting a positive attendance culture.
  • Promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of all employees.
  • Monitoring levels of health related absence for individuals, teams, services and the authority as a whole.
  • Providing  support for staff at times of needs, whilst addressing unacceptable levels of absence for health related reasons.

This applies to the management of both short-term and long-term health related absence and applies to all staff employed by the council and trainees and apprentices, excluding teachers and support staff employed by Locally Managed Community, Controlled, Voluntary Aided and Foundation Schools.
