Household waste - domestic bins
We use a wheeled bin system for household waste
collections. You should put your bin (no side
waste) at the collection point by 7am on your collection day,
with the bin lid fully closed to stop spillage and
health and safety hazards.
To make full use of the bins capacity, please flatten
polystyrene and, or packaging (that cannot be recycled), before
putting it in the bin. Please do not force objects into the
bin as this may mean that the bin cannot be emptied
properly.
Dealing with your household waste
Help us to help you - to make sure your bin is
emptied please follow the guidance below:
- Only use your wheeled bin to store domestic waste.
- For health and safety reasons, ensure your wheeled bin is ready
for collection with the lid fully closed.
- Avoid overloading your bin, if one person cannot
easily move the bin, it will not be emptied. Overloaded bins can
cause injury to refuse collectors and damage the collection
vehicle.
Over recent years we have been expanding our recycling
service to help residents reduce the amount of waste put into
refuse bins and dispose of waste in a way that is better for the
environment.
What SHOULD be placed in your wheeled bin?
Your wheeled bin can contain general household waste (including
waste food, non-recyclable plastics and a small amount of
light garden waste).
What SHOULD NOT be placed in your wheeled bin?
You wheeled bin should not contain recyclable
materials, hot ashes, soil, stones, rubble, engine oil or
heavy objects. Overloading can result in damage to the bin and
lifting equipment. The bin will not be emptied until the objects
are removed.
Cleaning your wheeled bin
To keep your bin clean put some newspaper in the bottom of the
bin. It is easier to clean your bin if you lie it on its side. Some
private companies offer a wheeled bin cleaning services. These
companies have no connection with Rochdale Borough
Council.
Collection days
Your refuse container will be emptied on the same day every
other week. Please ensure that it is placed at the
collection point by 7am on the nominated day. The container will be
emptied and returned by the refuse crew.
We will tell you about changes to your collection day through
articles in your local paper and on this website, or
by placing a sticker on your bin.
Collection point
It is important to make a note of where your refuse bin is left
once it has been emptied as this will be the preferred collection
point.
For most properties the collection point is at the kerbside. The
refuse bin should be positioned on the grass verge or open space so
as not to obstruct the highway or footway.
Some properties will have communal collection points (for
example; flats, cul-de-sacs, back to back terrace or town houses).
Your collection point in this case will be the place that your bin
is currently left by the refuse collectors.
If you are unsure where your collection point is, please discuss
this with your refuse collector, who will be happy to assist you.
