The Council provides support to asylum seekers under contract to the Home Office via a consortium of Greater Manchester local authorities where Manchester City Council acts as ‘Lead Authority’. Asylum seekers are provided with accommodation under this contract and support in the form of assistance with settling into their allocated accommodation and sign-posting to required services such as doctors, schools and so on.

The Council has no involvement or participation in determining who is an asylum seeker or determining the validity of their claim and has no role in determining if applicants should or should not be granted asylum.

The Council provides this service (which is non statutory) without any cost to Council Tax. All cost of providing the service are met from government payments/contract income.

The homelessness advice centre will offer advice and assistance with housing to asylum seekers who have received refugee status or exceptional leave to remain for a limited period of time. Use the contact details to the right to get in touch with the homelessness advice centre.
