Recognising pests
To find out whether you have unwelcome visitors be alert for the
telltale signs of activity.
Look for things like...
Signs of rats and mice
- Food wrappers that have been nibbled or disturbed, packets that
have been gnawed in storerooms and cupboards.
- Shredded scraps of paper used for nesting.
- Gnawed chair and table legs - the teeth of all rodents do not
stop growing so it is necessary for them to continually gnaw to
keep them to a reasonable length.
- Small black elongated droppings found where they are feeding or
active.
- Nibbled scraps around dustbins and vegetable or fruit stores.
Small holes gnawed through boxes, sacks, plastic dustbins and
external doors.
Signs of wasps
- A wasps' nest is usually grey or beige in colour and often
found in rooftops, cavity walls, sheds, trees and
flowerbeds.
- Wasps can be very aggressive and if a nest is causing a
nuisance then it is best treated professionally.
Signs of ants or cockroaches
- If you see any roaming on your floor.
- If you see dead in the cupboard and in cabinets.
- If you find cockroach manure which are bits of dark sand and
are greasy matter which are found in cabinets and in kitchens.
- If you find any on piled garbage, exposed food and sink water
or water on dirty dishes.
Signs of bedbugs or fleas
- Bites on the torso with with a red centre could mean that you
have bedbugs.
- Bites on the leg, around the ankle and feet are normally from
fleas.
- Look for tiny blood stains on your bed clothes.
- Look inside mattress folds, creases, zippers for tiny insect of
black specks of their feaces.
