Economic profile

Despite deindustrialisation, the predominant employer in Rochdale Borough remains in manufacturing (16.7%), which is considerably higher than the North West (11.6%) and Great Britain (10.2%). Other key employers are largely the public sector health provision, distribution, hotels & catering and the financial and professional services.

Rochdale is reliant on small and medium sized businesses for employment, which although is beneficial for a thriving economy the lack of major employers also reflects the weaknesses of the economy and the loss of incumbent businesses. Rochdale also has a low stock of registered businesses, which is lower than the Greater Manchester and the National average. Yeah on year fluctuations at borough level have mirrored both Greater Manchester and National trends.
