Yorkshire Street improvements
Environmental Improvements Programme
The Yorkshire Street Environmental Improvement Programme is
currently delivering over half a million pounds of investment
into regenerating Yorkshire Street from a tired and outdated high
street into a vibrant and modern setting.
The programme will deliver a series of
environmental improvements between Baillie Street to the
Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre including:
- Ground resurfacing in natural York stone and granite
paving
- Installation of stylish new street furniture
- Installation of new wall mounted and decorative street
lighting
Rochdale Borough Council has
successfully been awarded the funding from the European Regional
Development Fund and Central Government's Safer Stronger
Communities Fund to deliver these imporvements and the first
phase of works will be completed by the end of November 2007.
Additional funding has now also been
secured to extend the resurfacing works and deliver a second
phase early in the New Year (2008). Phase 2 will deliver a
series of environmental improvements between The Wheatsheaf
Shopping Centre and Cheetham Street.
Councillor Mohammad Sharif – the Portfolio Holder for
Regeneration is supporting the scheme and has even chipped in with
the works to lay the stone flags (pictured here). “I am so pleased
to see these works taking place on Yorkshire Street. The town
centre has not benefited from any significant investment for many
years now but that is all about to change. These works on Yorkshire
Street will act as a catalyst to regenerate the rest of the town
centre and will set and raise the standard for all future designs
and developments.”
Phase 2 works are expected to take
approximately 3-4 months and be completed by March to April 2008.
The environmental improvements along Yorkshire Street
will create a much pleasanter shopping environment and act as
a positive catalyst for investment and change by attracting
new shops, people and businesses into the town.
