Planning - advertisement control

The advertisement regulations set out a number of categories where permission is not required to display certain advertisements.

You may need to apply for advertisement consent to display an advertisement bigger than 0.3 square metres on the front of, or outside, your property. So you are unlikely to need consent for a sign with your house name or number on it, or even a sign saying 'Beware of the dog'.

Temporary notices up to 0.6 square metres relating to local events, such as fêtes and concerts, may be displayed for a short period. There are different rules for estate agents' boards, but, in general, these should not be bigger than 0.5 square metres.

A booklet, prepared by the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions and the Welsh Assembly for Wales, aims to explain to everyone who wants to display an outdoor advertisement how the system of advertisement control works in England and Wales.

Because you may find the system quite complicated at first, the booklet is arranged in separate sections and there are numerous illustrations which may show you how the system affects the type of advertisement you want to display.

Applying for advertisement consent

Advertisement consent forms are used when submitting an application for an advert or to display a hoarding.

Your completed application forms (3 copies) should be accompanied by the relevant checklist. You should indicate on the checklist the information you have provided and which information you do not consider relevant to your application. Please note, however, that any application which does not provide all the required details may not be validated.
