Healthy food award scheme
About the award
The Introduction of the Health Act in 2006 has meant that many
enclosed workplaces and businesses are now required to be
completely smoke-free. This includes catering businesses,
which were previously assessed for the Healthy Food award on levels
of smoke-free environment within their businesses.
It is therefore proposed that the scheme be nutrition led.
Catering businesses have recently been asked their opinions
regarding a joint hygiene and nutrition scheme.
The proposed scheme will comprise of care settings such as:
- Nurseries
- Day centres
- Elderly person's homes.
The catering sector will comprise of businesses such as:
- Takeaway food businesses
- Restaurants
- Sandwich shops
- Bakeries.
The first stage of the revised scheme for care settings will
centre around early years settings such as children's
centres. Assessments will take place later in 2008.
Qualifying conditions
Qualifying conditions needed for receipt of the Award can only
be judged at the time of inspection. The possession of the Award
does not guarantee subsequent standards.

What does the scheme cover
The Scheme covers all businesses where catering is carried out,
including but not limited to:
- Restaurants
- Cafes
- Takeaways
- Pubs
- Sandwich bars
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Residential homes
Achieving the award
Businesses that receive the award will get:
- A window sticker for the length of the award
- A certificate to display
- Attendance at an annual award ceremony and subsequent
publicity
