What you need to do

Once you have made the choice on where you intend to marry, you must BOTH attend your local Register Office to enter your own personal notice of your intention marry.  For convenience you can attend separately.

If you do not both reside in the same registration districts then you must give notice in both districts.  Before you can give notice to marry you must have been a resident in your registration district for a minimum of seven clear days.

If one or both of you are foreign nationals and subject to immigration controls, it will be necessary for you to contact the Home Office (Nationality and Immigration Unit) to apply for approval.   Please contact the Register Office for more information.

When can you marry?

You must allow a minimum of 15 clear days to pass after the second notice of the marriage before you can marry.  Your marriage notice must be displayed in the Register Office for 15 clear days from the date it is given, this is to enable a person to raise any legal objections to your marriage.  Each marriage notice is valid for 12 calendar months from the date you give it.

Please ensure that you telephone the Register Office to book an appointment before attending.
