Description of goods
A core area of work for Trading Standards is preventing false
claims about products and services and ensuring a fair trading
environment.
This includes enforcement of the Trade Descriptions Act,
Consumer Credit Act, Consumer Protection Act (misleading prices),
Prices Acts, Trade Marks Act, Copyright, Designs and Patents Act,
Unsolicited Goods and Services Act, Fair Trading Act and
others.
Goods must be as described. If any description is applied to
goods regarding their characteristics whether on packaging, in an
advert or verbally by the seller, the goods must match that
description. For example, if the colour or size of an item is
stated on the packet then goods inside must be of that colour or
size.
Contact the Trading Standards Service to report any problems or
to get advice if you have bought misdescribed goods or
services.
