Debt - mental health advice project
The
mental health advice project
(mhap) works with people with mental health
problems to ensure that they receive the correct entitlement of
benefit in order to increase their income and to help them
negotiate with creditors to avoid legal action.
Our Advice Service and
mhap produce a number of leaflets and booklets to
advise people on claiming the appropriate benefits such as
incapacity benefits and disability living allowance (DLA).
Alcohol, drug problems and disability living
allowance
People with alcohol or drug problems may not
realise that they could be entitled to
DLA
if they are unable to
control their addiction so that it is a dependence rather than
a matter of choice. We can give advice on what sort of difficulties
can be taken into consideration. A booklet on DLA and Mental
Health is also available.
Debt and mental health
One in three people with a serious mental
health problem are in debt and debt can make a mental health
problem worse. We can help you look at what can be done to deal
with debts and how to get help and advice in negotiating with
creditors to arrange repayments of debts at a realistic level.
If you would like a list of all the
publications and briefing sheets produced by the Advice Service, or
would like further advice on welfare benefits, debt or housing
issues please contact the Advice Service.
