Charitable trusts

The following trusts and organisations aim to support local residents who meet certain criteria. Please read the descriptions and guidance notes to see if you might be eligible.

Community Foundation for Greater Manchester

The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester also awards grants for charitable purposes and projects.

Herbert Norcross Scholarship Fund

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • They must not have attained the age of 30;
  • They must have permanent residence within the Rochdale Metropolitan Borough or the former administrative County of Lancaster;
  • They must have already completed a course of study at any University, College or other place of Further Education approved by Rochdale Council and be undertaking a second or further qualification.

Note: The Deeds of the Trust require that preference is given to applicants whose normal residence is in the former Borough of Middleton.

What grants are available for

If successful, monies will be awarded in respect of the following:

  • Course fees;
  • Travel expenses in pursuance of studies;
  • Books and equipment required for the course;
  • Any other expenses incurred in the pursuance of studies to be undertaken.

Heywood Educational Trust

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for grants from the Trust should either:

  • Live in the Heywood area, or in the village of Birch; or
  • Attend a school in the area; or
  • Have attended a school in the area prior to the making of an application for assistance.

Note: There is no age limit for applicants.

What Grants are available for

Grants from the Trust may be given for any purpose which promotes the education, training and development of the applicant. In particular, grants may be given for the following purposes:

  • To assist applicants in their attendance at any school, University, College of Education or other institution of further or higher (including professional and technical) education;
  • To assist applicants to travel, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad, to pursue their education;
  • To assist in the purchase of necessary items to enable an applicant to enter employment following a course of study.

Restrictions

Trustees regret that they are unable to provide full payment of fees or living expenses, but can only provide limited assistance.

Heywood Relief In Need Trust Fund/Heywood War Memorial Fund

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for assistance should normally be persons resident in the area of the former Borough of Heywood. At the discretion of the Trustees, persons otherwise eligible but residents outside the said area or who are temporarily located within the said area may apply.

What grants are available for

The Trustees may assist in the following ways:

  • To financially assist persons living in the former Borough of Heywood, who are in a condition of need, hardship or distress by making grants of money or providing or paying for items, services or facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons;
  • To pay for such items, services or facilities by way of donation or subscription to institutions or organisations which provide or which undertake in return to provide such items, services or facilities for such persons;
  • In exceptional cases, to grant relief to persons otherwise eligible under the point 'Who is elegivle to apply' above.
Restrictions
  • No payments can be made in relief of rates, taxes or public funds (for example Social Security benefits or other statutory payments) but may be made in supplementing relief or assistance provided out of public funds;
  • No payment can be made to repeat or renew the relief granted on any occasion in any case.

The Emerson Educational Trust For Middleton

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for grants from the Trust should either:

  • Reside in Middleton; or
  • Attend a school in the area; or
  • Have attended a school in the area prior to the making of an applicant for assistance.

Note: There is no age limit for applicants.

What grants are available for

Grants from the Trust may be given for any purpose which promotes the education and development of the applicant (including social and physical training). In particular, monies be given for the following purposes:

  • Scholarships, bursaries, grants or maintenance allowances tenable at any school, University, College of Education or other institution of further or higher (including professional and technical) education approved by the Trustees;
  • To provide financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to enable applicants on leaving school, University or other educational establishment to prepare for, or to assist their entry into, a profession, trade or calling;
  • Scholarships or maintenance allowances to enable applicants to travel, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad, to pursue their education.

Middleton Relief In Need Charity

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for assistance should normally be persons resident in the area of the former Borough of Middleton. At the discretion of the Trustees, persons otherwise eligible but resident outside the said area, or who are temporarily located within the said area may apply.

What grants are available for

The Trustees may assist in the following ways:

  • To financially assist persons living in the former Borough of Middleton, who are in a condition for need, hardship or distress by making grants of money or providing or paying for items, services or facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons;
  • To pay for such items, services or facilities by way of donations or subscriptions to institutions or organisations which provide or which undertake in return to provide such items, service or facilities for such persons;
  • In exceptional cases, a grant relief to persons otherwise eligible under the heading 'Who is eligible toapply' above.
Restrictions
  • No payments can be made in relief of rates, taxes or other public funds (e.g. DHSS benefits or other statutory payments) but may be made in supplementing relief or assistance provided out of public funds;
  • No payments can be made to repeat or renew the relief granted on any occasion in any case.

Norman Barnes Fund

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must live in Rochdale, Castleton, Norden or Bamford and be retired.

What grants are available for
Grants from the Fund may be given for the welfare of the aged.
Restrictions
  • Organisations for the elderly will normally be granted a maximum of £250.
  • No payments can be made to help pay tax, Council Tax or other statutory payments, except where relief or assistance is already provided out of public funds.
  • For applications for grants greater than £250, the support of an Officer of the Rochdale Council’s Social Services Department is required.
  • In normal circumstances, applicants can only apply for a grant once.

Rochdale Ancient Parish Educational Trust

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for grants from the Trust should:

  • Reside in the area of the Ancient Parish of Rochdale (N.B. the geographical area of the Ancient Parish of Rochdale includes Rochdale, Littleborough, Milnrow, Wardle, Whitworth, Todmorden, Saddleworth); or
  • Attend a school in the area of the Ancient Parish of Rochdale; or
  • Have attended a school in the area.

NOTE: There is no age limit for applicants, but preference will be given to persons qualified who are under the age of 25 years.

What grants are available for

Grants from the Trust may be given for any purpose which promotes the education of the applicant (including social and physical training). In particular, monies may be given for the following purposes:

  • Scholarships, bursaries, grants or maintenance allowances tenable at any school, University, College or Education or other institution of further or higher (including professional and technical) education approved by the Trustees;
  • Scholarships or maintenance allowances to enable such persons to travel, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad to pursue their education;
  • To provide financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to enable such persons to prepare for, or to assist their entry into a profession, trade or calling.
Restrictions

Prospective applicants need not apply if they have recieved an award in the previous year.

Rochdale Educational Trust

(incorporating the Holt and Turner Trust, the Rochdale Music Scholarship and the James Leach Scholarship)

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants for grants should either:

  • Reside in the area of the former Rochdale County Borough areas; or
  • Attend a school in the area; or
  • Have attended a school in the area prior to the making of an application for assistance.

NOTE: There is no age limit for applicants.

What grants are available for

Grants may be given for any purpose which promotes the education and development of the applicant, including social and physical training. In particular, monies may be given for the following purposes:

  • Scholarships, bursaries, grants or maintenance allowances tenable at any school, University, College of Education or other institution of further or higher (including professional and technical) education approved by the Trustees;
  • Scholarships or maintenance allowances to enable such applicants to travel, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad, to pursue their education;
  • To provide financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to enable applicants, on leaving school, University or other educational establishment, to prepare for, or to assist their entry into a profession, trade or calling;
  • To enable applicants to pursue a course of study or training connected with the textile industry;
  • To enable applicants to study music;
  • To enable applicants to pursue a course of study in either the French or German language in an institution of further or higher education.

The Rochdale Fund for Relief in Sickness

The Rochdale Fund For Relief in Sickness can assist any individual who requires help as a result of hardship caused by sickness, injury, disability or infirmity. This includes both physical and mental sickness, or deprivation of a nature likely to impair physical or mental health eg poverty or other adversity.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to apply for assistance the individual must live in the Borough of Rochdale. This includes Wardle, Littleborough, Middleton, Heywood, Norden, Birtle, Milnrow and Newhey, but not Whitworth.  We are unable to approve any applications from national charities unless they are able to supply names of individuals they are helping in the above area.

All awards are subject to the approval of the Trustees and requests must be supported by a letter from a recognised body such as Social Services, a Health Visitor, a Doctor or other appropriate authority.

What grants are available for
  • Medical equipment for hospitals
  • Equipment for special schools
  • Help for individuals by provision of aids for daily living, for example wheelchairs, hoists, IT equipment, adaptations to homes, special leisure equipment, medical aids etc. Also financial assistance towards the cost of washing machines, cookers, clothing, beds, bedding etc for those with illness in the family.
  • Respite in the form of holidays or outings, nursing aid or comfort, help for close relatives to visit otr care for patients
  • Other items, services and facilities at the discretion of the Trustees.
Restrictions

The Fund cannot help with:

  • Payment of debts, including utility bills, Council tax, Inland revenue payments etc
  • Hardship not directly related to, or caused as a result of, sickness.

Rochdale United Charities

Who is eligible to apply?

The area of benefit covered is the Ancient Parish of Rochdale, which includes the former County Borough of Rochdale, Castleton, Whitworth, Wardle, Littleborough, Todmorden and Saddleworth.

What grants are available for

The Trustees can make grants of money or provide or pay for items, services or facilities calculated to reduce the need. They may pay for items or services by way of donations or subscriptions to institutions or organisations, which provide or undertake in return to provide items, services or facilities.

The following are examples of how the Charity may provide relief:

  • Payments to relieve sudden distress, sickness or infirmity;
  • Financial assistance towards the cost of domestic appliances;
  • Arrangements for recuperative holiday for people long deprived of such a holiday;
  • Medical aids and equipment;
  • Provision of telephones, televisions or radio sets for the lonely, bedridden or housebound.
Restrictions

The Trustees cannot give money directly in relief of rates, taxes or other public funds, but may give money in supplementing relief or assistance provided out of public funds.

The Trustees cannot commit themselves to renew the relief granted on any occasion in any case.

Before making grants, the Trustees have to satisfy themselves that relief is not already available from a statutory source.
