Single Regeneration Budget
Revitalising Inner Rochdale (SRB5) is
a successful bid for money from the Government's Single
Regeneration Budget (SRB) managed by the North West Development
Agency. Starting in 1999, the programme was set to run for seven
years and has since been extended to run until March 2008.
Rochdale’s £25m SRB programme was drawn up by
a Partnership of organisations including the Council and a variety
of public, private and voluntary sector agencies, and consists of
over 100 projects delivered by the Council and partner
agencies.
The area of benefit comprises the older areas
around Rochdale Town Centre, including Sparth, Deeplish &
Milkstone, Newbold, Belfield, Wardleworth, Hamer and Lower Falinge.
These areas were identified because of high levels of unemployment,
low educational achievement, poor housing and health.
The programme was broken down into five
different themes:
- Community capacity building – helping local people to
contribute to regeneration
- Lifelong learning – learning opportunities for all ages
- Physical regeneration -creating a better place to live, work
and invest
- Quality of life - improving everyday life through health sports
and cultural projects
- Social inclusion - providing opportunities for everyone to
benefit
Amongst the biggest achievements of the programme
are:
- Residential areas made safer and more attractive
- Cohesion between the areas diverse communities has been
promoted
- Physical improvements to town centre and business
facilities
- Training schemes and agencies are ensuring more local people
get better employment
- Hundreds of grants for local community projects have been
funded
- Arts and cultural projects like Touchstones have been
supported
Following a wide-ranging review with partners and the
community in 2004, new priority themes were identified:
- Supporting local businesses
- Helping local people get the training and skills
needed to get into employment
