Equalities - assessment and consultation
Equality Impact Assessments on policies and practices
The new public sector equality duty protects people from
discrimination on the basis of certain characteristics which are
known as protected characteristics. There are 9 protected
characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or
civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, religion or belief, sex
(gender), and sexual orientation. As part of our approach to
equality impact assessment on policies and practices, we have
developed a framework for assessing our policies and practices and
their impact upon on all the protected groups. This framework
includes consulting with stakeholders and involving them in the
development of targets and actions to address the findings of these
assessments.
Services examine their policies and procedures with the aim of
preventing discriminatory outcomes or unmet needs and fulfill the
council’s statutory duties under the Equality Act 2010.
