Mayor's Charity Appeal 2011-12

Middleton Heartline, Springhill Hospice, MAD Theatre Company and Demesne Community Centre

This year Councillor Alan Godson, supported by the Mayoress, Miss Gillian Brown, will be raising funds for Middleton Heartline, Springhill Hospice, the MaD Theatre Co and Demesne Digital Mammography Fund.

The MaD Theatre Company provides a creative platform for young people in the Middleton area of the borough, particularly those from socially and economically deprived backgrounds. They write all their own material dealing with issues relevant to the participants and perform in professional theatres all over the North West. They also run a Theatre in Schools project in Middleton secondary schools and provide Arts Award Accreditation to all the young people involved.

Middleton Heartline is a charity that dramatically transforms the lives of heart surgery patients and was set up in Middleton in 1990 by six people recovering from heart surgery. Heartline provides advice, help, holistic therapy and exercise regimes for anyone who have had heart problems. The group also provides support and assistance to members and their families to help encourage and promote a fitter, healthier lifestyle.

Springhill Hospice opened in 1989, and provides specialist palliative care for people with life-limiting illness. In-patient, Day Hospice, outpatient and a 24 hour advice line is available for patients throughout Rochdale and surrounding areas. In addition to services for patients, care is extended to the patients’ carers and families. The Hospice is an independent charitable organisation and relies on voluntary contributions in order to keep the doors open.

The Demesne Community Association in Middleton is a local campaign to raise funding for a Digital Mammography machine in Middleton. The people of Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale suffer some of the highest death rates from breast cancer in the country.  At present, women have to travel out of the area to Rochdale or Bury for screenings and installing a digital mammography in Middleton would encourage women to be screened and thereby improve survival in breast cancer.
